Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom IDEOs New Ideas for Building Innovation

Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom IDEO's New Ideas for Building Innovation Global design firm IDEO is known for its innovation. In fact, many clients approach the firm specifically because they want to learn its secrets. In a research initiative meant to get at the heart at what makes innovative companies tick, IDEO studied its 26-year archive of projects that focused on clients’ internal team dynamics, as well as external sources focused on innovation (includingFast Company‘s annualMost Innovative Companieslists). One major theme emerging from the research? Many business leaders, including those in IT, hold back permission to innovate. Scared off by potential security breaches through the cloud and employees going rogue with unauthorized software solutions, IT often serves as a bottleneck in the implementation of cutting edge technology. But, as the data clearly showed, the workers closest to the organization’s most pressing business challenges are the ones who play the most critical roles in leveraging innovation to solve them. At FastCoDesign, Katharine Schwab reported the main recommendations gleaned from IDEO’s data. Let’s highlight those, along with some ideas for encouraging IT to greenlight your initiatives. Keep lots of options open The IDEO research indicated that when teams iterate on five or more different solutions, they are 50 percent more likely to launch successfully. This is contrary to the traditional viewpoint that you should pilot and invest heavily in only one idea at a time. Staying flexible as to where the project might go also allows you to iterate alongside IT and accept that team’s suggestions for how to best move forward. Challenge existing processes IDEO found that when the majority of team members said that they felt comfortable challenging the status quo and acting with autonomy, the chances of a failed launch decreased by nearly 17 percent. Talk to your IT group about how you can experiment in a safe way that doesn’t result in any unnecessary risks to the organization or its technology infrastructure. Share best practices and seek IT’s partnership in the realm ofprocess improvement. For the rest of the findings, head over to the QuickBase Fast Track blog.

Changes in Health Care The Nurse Practitioners is the New Doctor

Changes in Health Care The Nurse Practitioners is the New Doctor Doctors have long been the rock stars of the medical world. The American people are a tad obsessed with the profession. Generations of children have listed doctor as their dream profession. Dozens of medical dramas have followed young and attractive doctors as they save the lives of their patients. The medical drama that has a nurse as one of the main cast is incredibly rare. Why this obsession? Doctors diagnose potentially life threatening conditions, prescribe medicine and conduct surgery. Traditionally they have a level of autonomy that nurses have not had. And as an added bonus, the profession grants a six figure salary. Doctor Is Not the Only Option Times have changed. In some states, nurse practice laws have been passed granting nurses more autonomy. Hawaii, Maine, Oregon, and a dozen other states have passed laws to grant licensed nurse practitioners (NP) the ability to evaluate, diagnose, manage treatments, and prescribe medication without consulting or being supervised by a licensed physician. NP’s can either be granted more autonomy while working with a health professional team or be granted the ability to start and head their own private practice. Not every state offers that level of freedom, a few states, including Texas and California, require that all NPs be supervised and managed by a physician. Check out the American Association of Nurse Practitioners’ State Practice Environment to determine how much autonomy you could potentially have if you pursue NP certifications in your state. Due partly to states like Oregon and Main granting full practice to Nurse Practitioners, the need for nurse practitioners is high. By 2020, the number of jobs available to NPs is expected to grow by 31%. Chances are if you pursue a NP career, you will be able to find a job. As if the high job prospects isn’t enough of a perk, a career as a nurse practitioner has an average annual salary of $92,670. And the top paid NPs even break into the lower end of a six figure salary at $110,130 a year. What Does It Take to Become an NP? NPs must have either a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). And to even get into a MSN or DNP program, colleges like Ohio University expect their prospective students to have a BSN from an accredited university and a current RN license. Other colleges like the University of Arizona only expect their students to have Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN). ADN to MSN programs will allow nursing students to pursue their BSN and MSN at the same time. Beyond an MSN, practicing NPs must achieve certification by one of the five nurse practitioner certifying organizations. Certification is achieved by taking an exam created by one of the organizations. Individuals looking for a career change and medical professionals hoping to advance their careers, might want to consider becoming a nurse practitioner. In many states, nurse practitioners can be a solid alternative to becoming a doctor. You can find more medical career opportunities to pursue as you contemplate your future by checking out this article. Now might be the time for a change.

10 Tips for Writing Your Next Piece of Content

10 Tips for Writing Your Next Piece of Content Over the years, the way people use content to market on the different platforms has changed a lot. Traditionally, marketers used to go for the push technique where they would send information to their potential customers to get them to engage in the conversation. Ideally, it is the marketer who would initiate the conversation. However, this has changed a lot. Today, the technique in use is the pull technique where customers are attracted to your website by the quality of information being posted. Here, it is the potential customer that initiates the conversation. The biggest challenge with the latter is that as the owner of the website, you need to satisfy the information need of your potential customers. Keeping these audience interested is not always easy as it require a lot of commitment and hard work. Your content needs to be both interesting and fresh is you are to keep a hold of your visitor. Homework-Desk will take you through 10 of the most effective tips that can take your content to the next level and guarantee you readership from your customers. Begin with the headline A headline is very important especially when it comes to creating content for social marketing purposes. The headline needs to be very catchy if you are to attract readership. Try as much as possible to create a headline that can easily go viral and blow people away. What most content marketers do is that they come up with a post idea, write it down and then work on coming up with something awesome. Remember that most people will only read a blog post because it has a catchy title and that it is not a blog that goes viral but the headline. You need to have a story to tell While it is true to say that our writing personality and styles tend to influence greatly our content, the ability to tell a story while creating content has a bigger influence on people. Whenever you are writing content that is expected to have a huge social impact, try as much as possible to incorporate specific stories and example which people can relate to. Tie your ideas if possible with real life stories. Do an incisive research There is nothing buzz killing to you and your website than providing your readers with incorrect information. Since you intend to produce content for a wider audience, you need to make sure that you have your facts right. It might take a lot to build trust but a simple negligence can cost you and your website. Simplify your content Try as much as possible to produce content that is easy to read because you expect readership from both the knowledgeable and the not so privilege. Consider writing using plain English and avoid marketing jargon that would render the content useless to a certain audience. The content in itself should be properly formatted and include short sentences. Create informative content In addition to having a catchy headline that is capable of going viral, you need also to invest a lot in creating interesting content which can easily attract readership. As mentioned above, the pull technique is what is currently in play and you can only attract customers if you can give them awesome content. Write in a conversation manner If you really want your content to be engaging, you need to adapt a conversation form of writing. This actually means that you think of a question your readers are likely to ask and address the same in your piece. To enhance the conversation tone, you may also want to keep your sentences as short as possible. The main reason behind this is that you want your customers to have the feel that your organization or website is being run by people. Know how to sell at the right time Getting one of your readers to convert and become your customer is always the goal of most marketers. The stakes are even higher when one uses content to market their product or service. It is very important to know when to start selling your product. One needs to understand that conversion is super tough even on social media. Before converting, a potential customer needs to transition from one level of exertion to another. Getting one to transition from the thinking phase to the buying phase takes a lot than what most people assume. For you to succeed with your conversion, you need to know exactly what your readers want so that you can be able to capture them while they are transitioning and help them to build both the trust and the need for your goods or services. Involve others You do not have to do it alone. Try as much as possible to get others who can help your to generate traffic involved. This can be done by simply adding shared content. You may opt to enlist a number of posts and great ideas from other players in the industry who have been identified to be social media savvy. Never cease to be curious Your curiosity can go a long way in helping you to create awesome and click worthy content. With your curiosity, it is more practical to get great and interesting ideas for your piece which is what most readers look out for in any outstanding content. The same curiosity needs to be reflected in your content. When creating content, ensure that you build curiosity in the readers mind so that they can continue reading your content. Prompt your readers to buy This can be successfully achieved by including a call to action towards the end of your content. Consider this your go-to strategy and use it as often as possible to spark thought. However, this cannot be achieved if say for example your content is not interesting enough to keep the readers engaged. Therefore, start by ensuring that you have great content. And the rest will come into play. In as much as this sounds hard, it is practical and achievable.

7 Ways Sex Education is Like Job Search

7 Ways Sex Education is Like Job Search I wanted to have a little fun today and draw some parallels about how job search is like sex education! This is primarily addressing the role parents should/could/would play in educating their children on how to. 1. No one likes talking about it No one likes talking about sex education and all its gory details, nor do people like talking about all the work that has to go into job search. 2. Ignore it and it will go away As parents, deep down inside, we dont want to admit that our children may be having sex, therefore, if we ignore it, maybe we can wish it away. Same with job search! Ignore it and a job will magically appear! 3. Theyll figure it out Or on the flip side of the coin, isnt having sex intuitive? Shouldnt someone be able to figure out how to do it? 4. Theyll ask when they need the help No one in their right mind would ever ask their parents for advice about sex. It is embarrassing. What about job search? Being unemployed carries a negative stigma and feelings of insecurity and self-doubt. Asking for help is often just too embarrassing. 5. Show them a video/Send them to a class Sure, a video or class provides some information and education, but it isnt the same as doing it! Nor can you just send someone to a job search class and hope theyll figure it out. 6. Once and done Phew, dont we feel better once weve had the talk? Our work is done. Or is it? 7. The devils in the details While we hope weve provided a solid foundation of ethics, values and morals for our children which will allow them to make good choices, it is often  specific scenarios (or peer pressure) that cause children to get confused or stray from their course. Who is reinforcing the message of career management, networking for a lifetime, how to behave during an interview, and business etiquette? Two Separate Worlds We live in a complicated world. One that is moving faster every day. Yet when we think about how we are preparing our children for the big real world out there, I think we are doing them a huge injustice. Parents and educators treat school as school and work as work and never the two shall meet. Until we can blend the working world with the classroom, our children will remain isolated or worse, disengaged. They are unable to see the connection between what they are learning and how it will help them after grade 12. Many parents dont want schools to teach or mandate sex education, but they are doing it. Now, take a look at what your school is teaching your children about careers. It will frighten you, or should. Image from  U.S. National Archives and Records Administration
